Forging & Metallurgy Glossary

A comprehensive reference dictionary for technical terminology used in precision metal forging, non-destructive testing, and precision finishing.

Austenitizing
Metallurgy
A heat treatment process where iron or steel alloys are heated above their critical transformation temperature to change their crystalline structure into austenite, preparing the metal for hardening.
Charpy Impact Test
Testing
A standardized high-strain-rate test used to determine the amount of energy absorbed by a material during fracture, providing crucial data on the material's notch toughness and ductile-brittle transition temperature.
Closed-Die Forging
Forging
A forging process where heated metal is compressed between two or more custom-machined dies that contain the desired shape of the component, allowing for near-net-shape manufacturing with high volume and precision.
Grain Flow
Metallurgy
The directional orientation of the metallic grain structure resulting from plastic deformation during forging. Continuous grain flow significantly increases the fatigue resistance and mechanical strength of the component.
Heat Treatment
Metallurgy
Controlled heating and cooling processes (like normalizing, annealing, or tempering) applied to forged metals to alter their physical and mechanical properties without changing the product's shape.
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
Testing
A non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials by inducing a magnetic field and applying iron particles.
Open-Die Forging
Forging
The process of deforming heated metal between flat or simple contour dies without completely enclosing the material. Ideal for very large components and low-volume production.
Pickling and Passivation
Surface Finish
A chemical surface treatment for stainless steel to remove weld scale and impurities (pickling) and to form a protective chromium oxide layer that prevents corrosion (passivation).
Quenching & Tempering (Q&T)
Metallurgy
A two-step heat treatment where steel is rapidly cooled (quenched) to harden it, followed by reheating to a lower temperature (tempered) to reduce brittleness and increase toughness.
Seamless Ring Rolling
Forging
A specialized forging process where a punched metal preform is expanded radially and axially between rotating rolls to create a seamless, continuous-grain ring with high structural integrity.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Testing
A volumetric non-destructive testing method that uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws, voids, or inclusions deep within thick forged metal components.
